Your Review Can Actually Help

One of the things you must do when you are part of online referral programs is write valuable, high-quality product reviews. When making these reviews, remember that you’re not supposed to advertise for the company. Marketers are paid to craft very specific and positive messages about a brand, and this is something you are under no obligation to do.

What you should concentrate on is providing the company and other consumers your whole, unfiltered experience with the product. For example, if you are reviewing a line of face towels, you should include how soft it is, how well it can remove dirt or moisture, and if the material feels like it will get easily ruined.

Writing things like “it was a good product” or “the best!” is not going to help anybody. If you did have a good experience when using the item, you must explain why. Here are a few more tips that can help you make better reviews:

Write in an objective tone of voice

Though you might have had a positive experience, it’s important that you not sound like the product’s biggest fan. In the same vein, you should avoid being hyper-critical. Maintain a neutral position when writing, even as you discuss glaring shortcomings or obvious strengths. You must also strive to find at least one or two points for improvement—though you may have enjoyed using the item, no product is 100 percent perfect for everyone.

A good rule of thumb is that for every positive point you make, you must offer something that needs improvement. If you cannot maintain this ratio, at least have two to three constructive criticisms. This makes your review more credible to readers.

Represent details accurately

Before writing your review, list down information that will be useful to other consumers. If you’re reviewing a product, note package instructions, dimensions of the item, and how closely it resembles the advertised item. For services, you can write about the availability of the provider, their agency, the date and time you availed of the service, and the accommodations you had to make, if any.

Including the delivery details is also helpful, especially for products selling through third-party platforms. Though you must note that not all distributors are manufacturers and some retailers have little to no control over when a product arrives at your door. For this, just take note of how long it takes your product to arrive and whether or not this can be attributed to the listed retailer.

Providing complete information on your experience doesn’t just mean recording your impressions. It also includes these things, as any of these are likely to affect other customers’ experiences.

Read your review before sending

Reviews are supposed to help other people make a decision about whether or not to make a purchase. Therefore, it is good to write clearly and concisely, also checking for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. These things will increase the readability of your review.

Writing in the active tense (“It helps me” instead of “I was helped by it”) also improves readability. If you are stuck thinking of how to structure your review, you can divide it into three parts: the introduction of the product, its pros and cons, and suggestions for improvement.

In the introduction, you can provide the details you gathered while using or availing of the product or service, otherwise known as the quantitative aspects of your experience. Towards the end of the first paragraph, you can add your personal opinion regarding the product or service.

The second paragraph should have advantages and disadvantages of using the product or service. Here, you must go beyond your own experience and see how the purchase might impact other people. Finally, the last paragraph should have your suggestions for upcoming iterations of the item, or for people who will purchase the item in the future.

Writing a product review is about making a balanced assessment of a product or service. As long as you keep in mind that you’re writing this for consumers like yourself, you will accomplish your task as a reviewer.
