Humble Bundle Background

Humble Bundle was founded in November 2010 by Jeff Rosen and John Graham. It’s currently headquartered in San Francisco with an estimate of 60 employees. Humble Bundle was initially run by Wolfire Games in 2010 but by its second bundle, it was spun out to also manage the distribution, payments and promotion of the bundles. The first batch of bundles were collections of games that were developed independently and feature multi-platform support (including Linux, MacOS and Windows). Bundles are being offered every few months for duration of two weeks and it always draws media attention. Some bundles even surpass $1 million in sales.

What’s good about this company is aside from business, it supports a lot of charities, including American Red Cross, Wikimedia, WaterAid, Action Against Hunger, Child’s Play, charity: water and The Electronic Frontier Foundation, among others. As of June 2019, Humble Bundle managed to raise more than $150 million across 50 charities.

From the time it was conceptualized, Humble Bundle has been offering a two week period wherein users can use the so called pay what you want model for the three to five games in the bundle. This mode of payment has been so successful that their number of unique customers raised to 6 million. In this payment mode, people usually pay from 5 to 10 dollars. The money goes to three sources which are the developers, chosen charities and humble tip. The usual setup for this is the developers receive 65%, which they will then divide amongst their selves. Then the chosen charities (which usually contain two) get 20% split evenly and lastly, the humble tip which goes to the company with a default of 15%. The users can modify the percentage each source would receive or they could choose to not give to one of the sources or none at all.

The results are very surprising because even though users have a choice to not give, they still voluntarily did and most of them didn’t modify the allocations. Some who did leaned towards giving more to charity. That’s the reason why the company didn’t collapse, instead even thrived through using this payment modality. The users can pay via Stripe using major credit cards or debit cards such as visa, Diners Club, JCB, Discover, American Express and Mastercard. They can also pay using Paypal. Amazon payments are also accepted but only for those who pay in USD.

In January 2012, they launched their first Android-based bundles which do not feature redemption codes but require the users to install Humble bundle instead. In 2015, they even started a partnership with Nintendo, offering Bundles called Humble Nindie Bundle which consists of Nintendo 3Ds and Wii U indie games. The Bundles are available on the Nintendo eShop. Their chosen charity for this partnership is code.org, which is a non-profit that aims to expand computer science related curriculum to public schools.

Know The Pros And Cons Of Various Companies In The Video Game Storefront Industry Using Your Chums Profile

The founders of Humble Bundle were recognized by the magazine PC Gamer as community heroes for their support of indie games. John Graham was listed on Forbes 30 under 30 leaders in the field of games in its 2013 edition.

An eBook was even released for Humble Bundle, called Humble eBook Bundle which sold over 42,000 copies in two weeks, almost the equivalent of a monthly bestseller. One of the game development team contacted by Humble Bundle (Hitbox Team) also said that their game was super successful post partnership with Humble Bundle. Prior to it, they manage to sell 10 daily via Steam but after their game came out in Humble Indie Bundle 6, their sales skyrocketed to 50,000 copies per day.

Their success was attributed to their payment model and the fact that they don’t place limitation on their content once you are subscribed. They also always have a chosen charity, to which proceeds go every time someone pays their subscription fee.

Since Humble Bundle has been extremely successful, a lot of other companies were created with the same purpose and target market. One of which is Fanatical. This United Kingdom based video game retailer company was founded in 2012. Currently, it has sold over 62 million authorized game keys. It has a selection of more than 5,950 games and has partnered with over 900 game developers and publishers.

Another competitor is Indie Gala. This is almost exactly like Humble Bundle, except that the games are mostly only offered for Windows users and with digital rights management. The first bundle was released on December 2011. Indie Gala also launched Galafund which aims to support development of independent games.

Last but definitely not the least is Indie Royale, which also offers a series of game bundles. It was a joint venture between Desura, which was a video game download service that is now defunct, and IndieGames.com, an independent game editorial site. Indie Royale’s difference with Humble Indie Bundles is that it has a minimum price.

Offering bundles is not just limited to digital games. It has now expanded to gadgets, software and even web services. Stack Social Bundle is one of the companies that offer these bundles. The company was founded in 2011 by Josh Payne and is now backed up by some of the top investors, including Wavemaker, Draper Associates, Amplify and 500 Startups.

There are still a lot of other alternative options aside from the ones that were mentioned in this article. If you are interested to check more options, you can head on to Chums in order for you to know more about all of these alternatives.
